Paul Mudd Murphy has been DJing for 31 years and producing for 27 of those. His first release, as part of Akwaaba in 1995, Just Pilau’ (on The Idjut Boys Discfunction label) was his entry into the mid 90’s nu disco era. Just Pilau’ was an instant classic and got quickly licensed to Francois Kevorkian’s Essential Mix’ compilation and Ron Trent’s Musical Reflections’ album. This success set the band up to release two acclaimed albums, Do it Tomorrow’ and Too Shiny’ with remixes following for Tummy Touch, Strut, Bear Funk and Session Records.

Akwaaba split in 2003 and Mudd went on to record his first solo album, Claremont 56’ for Rong Music and followed this by setting up his own label, also titled Claremont 56’ with the first release by Mudd & Pollard, Villa Stavros’. 15 years and a 100 or so releases later, Claremont 56 is going strong, with a discography including the sell-out compilation series, Originals’ and unreleased mixes of Holger Czukay’s epic back catalogue of works. He also runs Leng Records with Simon Purnell

In his own recording career, Mudd has been one half of Smith & Mudd since 2000, working alongside partner Benjamin James Smith. The balearic classic Shulme’ was their first vinyl release and was voted no 1 track of the year by the DJ History Forum in 2006. Three albums followed, Blue River’, Le Suivant’ &Gorthleck’ and the duo have continued to mix their influences and lead the way in the modern day balearic scene.

Another of Mudd’s project, BISON’, also formed with Benjamin James Smith, includes krautrock legend, Holger Czukay from Can’ and Salvatore Principato from the cult NY80’s band Liquid Liquid’. Their first single Way to LA’ became a downtempo classic. Mudd has also worked with Jazz drumming legend Chico Hamilton, on the release Kerry’s Caravan’ and Ahmed Fakroun, a pioneer of modern Arabic world music, on Drago’. He is also part of a live band called Paqua’ with Bing Ji Ling & Patrick Wood from the Phenomenal Handclap Band and Patrick Dawes from Groove Armada. After a mini tour in 2013, they extended that to a worldwide one in 2014 with the release of their debut album and performances at Glastonbury and The Garden Festival. His recent band project is Hillside’ alongside old musical friends Patrick Dawes and Alex Searle.

Mudd has Dj’ed across the world and tours Japan every year. Past gigs include Precious Hall in Sapporo, Stockholms award winning club night Slow Blow’, Lux in Portugal, Sarcastic disco & A Club Called Rhonda in LA, PS1 festival at MoMa New York, Lowlife & No Way Back in San Francisco.
